Since genetics has been attributed as a cause of bipolar disorder, in the case that members of the family suffer from bipolar disorder the child can be at an increased risk of developing the disease. Nearly 80% of twins that are suffering from bipolar disorder see the disease in both twins, rather than just one, which can demonstrate the inheritability of the disease.
In some cases, research has demonstrated that defective or inactive neurotransmitters may contribute to the causes of bipolar disorder as they are unable to relay certain messages between the body and the brain resulting in interruptions in mood and interruptions between the impulses and the personality.
Although these are two of the most common causes which are thought to trigger bipolar disorder there can be many others. Research must be completed to allow the health care professionals to effectively find the cause, so that a cure can be reached.
