The Significance of Split Personality Disorder Symptoms
A split personality disorder is characterized under Multiple Personality Syndrome (MPS). Being a psychiatric malfunction, it makes the patient split into different personalities called alters. Each of these alters has a memory of her own and is totally oblivious of the existence of the other alters. Therefore, the patient goes through periods of amnesia. The reason behind this disorder is severe abuse in early childhood. This may include sexual abuse too. When the person goes through this traumatic experience, she prefers to dissociate herself from the incident and takes on the personality of the alter. There is an unmistakable change in the voice when the alter takes over. The split personality disorder symptoms can be noticed in the childhood itself when the alters are formed. There can be more than one alter.
Symptoms:
- If you have no idea of how you arrived at a particular location which you had no intention of visiting
- If you find diaries and letters which you possess but are written in a completely different handwriting.
- If there are things in the house which you cannot remember being there before or how they came there.
- If you have amnesia for certain stretches of time which may extend to months and years.
- If you are called by different names by people who are known and friendly.
- If you start hearing voices inside your head.
The split personality disorder symptoms also say that the patient might go into a flashback state to the period when she was abused and then feel totally disoriented without any idea about the time or place. After analyzing the split personality disorder symptoms in a person, it is time to get treatment. This is quite difficult but psychotherapy may provide some relief. Achieving internal harmony between the different alters is the goal of psychotherapy. It is not possible to get rid of the alters but all of them can be made to live in peace.
