However, there are also those who have panic attacks so frequently that they have been diagnosed as having a panic disorder. People with a panic disorder have too many panic attacks and these attacks appear to occur on a continual basis. A panic attack occurs when a person has a surge of fear and anxiety. Such attacks can occur without warning, appearing to emotionally and psychologically paralyze the person. Someone going through a panic attack may feel like there is no survival from the experience. It can cause withdrawal, isolation and a lack of control over one’s life and actions.

Panic attacks can be a scary occurrence, even if an individual has experienced such attacks before. For people experiencing panic attacks for the first time, it can even be more frightening. A panic attack is a feeling of intense fear that can momentarily cripple a person. Although the cause of the panic attack may not be immediately known, people have described these attacks as similar to a heart attack. It comes on suddenly, leaving the victim helpless and in a panic. Even though panic attacks may last from as little as 10 seconds to as long as 15 minutes or more, panic attacks can generate a sense of dying or losing control. This is not a fun experience. When the onset of a panic occurs, it can feel as if your chest is being tightened and it can cause the patient to feel an immediate shortness of breath. This is because the tension within the body increases and a rise in blood pressure occurs as the patient begins to panic.
