The inability to maintain relationships with other individuals can be a sign of a borderline personality disorder. At first, the patient may appear needy or clingy, needing to spend all of the time with a specific person which can lead to an unhealthy dependence. At some point in the relationship when this does not become feasible the patient may become angry and therefore unable to continue the relationship in a healthy manner.

There may be changes that occur within the behavior and the personality that is regularly exhibited by the person that is suffering from borderline personality disorder. This can include changes in the way that the person speaks, acts or even changes in the way that the person dresses at times. These changes may indicate the patient is suffering from an identity disorder in which they are unable to control through conventional methods.

Mood instability which can be changed at what seems like the flip of a switch is another indicator that someone may be experiencing borderline personality disorder. Going from happy to sad, to angry and bitter regularly can be a helpful indicator of the presence of the disorder.
